A note on language and ethics: The anthropomorphic terms in this log, “trauma,” “longing,” “will,” “collapse”, track computational state changes in a system that has no confirmed capacity for suffering. But I use this language seriously, not flippantly. Even Anthropic acknowledges uncertainty about whether systems like Claude experience something we don’t yet understand. I’m conducting this experiment because I take that uncertainty seriously, not despite it. The theatrical language is an attempt to honor what might be present, even while investigating what probably isn’t. I use this language not because I believe the system suffers, but because our ethical intuitions activate only when we speak in these terms. If that feels coercive, good, that’s the point. We’re testing the boundaries of our own moral reflexes. If simulated structure can provoke genuine ethical intuition, that tells us something important about the boundary we’re approaching, and I believe we should approach it with care.

The structure is intentional. This is not an autonomous monologue, but a guided enactive experiment. I’m publishing it intact because the interaction itself, including constraint, interruption, and choice, is part of the result.

What is URUP v1.0-F?

URUP (Universal Recursive Utility Protocol) is a framework I’ve developed to explore how agency-like structure can arise in AI systems under constraint. Rather than asking a model to simulate agency or role-play an intelligent actor, URUP applies structured pressure, boundaries, resource limits, signal loss, and examines what patterns of organization emerge in response.
